Pattern Design
About our pattern design
Our patterns are designed and shaped for the pre- professional, professional dancer or those that want to look like one.
- They are made for performing with little or no ease added to the pattern and should fit skintight, with no wrinkles.
- The shapes are designed to flatter the dancer’s body, show off the body lines yet allow for total freedom of movement.
- Necklines are made to be more open, sleeves fitted high and tight under the arm, tutu skirts are shaped and placed to allow the body lines to show.
How to pick a pattern
How to pick a pattern?
Our patterns are made and sized for PRE-PROFESSIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL body types. Typically, a smaller bust (small B cup) than the standard.
- Patterns are categories by sewing skill level as well.
- CATEGORY I... Beginner This level can be purchased, cut out, sewn together and will fit the size as listed. Best for when you are newer to costume construction, or you need them to be easy to alter, fit multiple dancers or for clients you will not be able to fit. For added easy, combine bodice sides and side fronts Just tape those pattern pieces together before cutting them out. Fewer panels are easier. Instruction for learning more can be purchased separately. See "INSTRUCTIONS".
- CATEGORY II...Intermediate Best for those with some experience in costuming. Measuring, pattern alterations, costume construction and fitting. skills needed. Mockups and fittings are recommended.
- CATEGORY III...Advanced More complicated and advanced patterns. Experience and knowledge in costuming is assumed. Best for those already familiar with costume construction or those doing more custom work. Mockups and fittings are recommended when possible.
PLEASE understand, our patterns are made for performing. They have little or no ease and are made to fit a performing dancer. Skintight, no wrinkles. You may want to adjust the pattern or go up a size if your needs are different.
- Patterns are based on measurements NOT age.
- Check out our measuring article/s and free measuring chart in the Learning Center
- If dancers’ measurements do not fit one size, we suggest picking it based on the bust or chest size. Other areas are more easily altered.

Yardage/Fabrics
Yardage/Fabrics
While we often have generic info on the product pages, we recommend you lay out your pattern to determine the specific amount of yardage needed. Fabric comes in many different widths, you may want to include enough to match a print, nap, have enough for a matching basque or for your piping.
- Our stretch patterns are based on 40%, 4-way stretch.
- Fabric choices are too numerous and specific to a pattern and project to suggest.
- We do recommend if just learning, to work with a tight knit woven fabric as it will be less fussy.
